Our Work

This project renovated large portions of the second and third floor of the corporate office building. JDR Engineering provided construction administration, closeout, and record drawing services for plumbing, HVAC, and electrical disciplines. JDR Engineering did not provide any design services for this project as they were provided by a separate consultant. Services provided for the project included: on-site verification that installations were completed in accordance with the contract documents and applicable codes, participation in construction meetings, responding to contractor questions and requests for information, reviewing test and balance reports, and ultimately filing a project compliance statement with the State. Additionally, JDR Engineering completed record drawings for the project, in electronic format, based on contractor provided as-built drawings, test and balance reports in observed installations.

The Garver Feed Mill redevelopment included the renovation of a 58,900 square foot building that primarily functions as a food production facility. The rehabilitation of the Garver Feed Mill was completed to State and National Parks preservation standards to be registered as a National Historic Landmark. Special care was taken to maintain its architectural character, and renovations consistent with its historic use.

The development houses several established local food makers and craftspersons as well as individual and shared production, warehouse, and general office spaces. Additional spaces that support the tenants include an event venue/atrium for community, private and tenant events, a café, bar, and restaurant, and office spaces. The outdoor spaces will include two outdoor patios and Garver Green gathering area, and demonstration gardens. The renovation also includes the construction of 149 parking stalls, 76 bike stalls, and five loading spaces for tenant shipping and receiving.

Included, as part of a future phase, the Garver Feed Mill redevelopment will have up to fifty micro-lodges. Micro-lodges include a diversity of tiny house designs and models and we expect them to be sourced from around the world. Micro-lodges are low impact, sustainable, and mobile cabin-like structures ranging between 100 and 750 square feet.

Additionally, a 10,560 square foot facility will be constructed that will provide Olbrich Gardens, Garver tenants, and Garver operations with space dedicated for storage. The building will accommodate the storage of Olbrich Gardens seasonal items when not in use as well as maintenance equipment and other miscellaneous tenant items.

The project includes siting and design of photovoltaic systems at the Lussier Heritage Center. The Lussier Family Heritage Center is a year-round Dane County Parks facility available for weddings & receptions, meetings, educational programs, retreats, conferences, and special events.

JDR provided the primary scope determination and electrical design for the project. The initial study phase included the assessment and the proposal of systems that will address site-specific restrictions and minimize visual impact around the facility.

The existing electrical systems were reviewed to determine interface and connection requirements to the existing electrical system. The schematic design phase refines and further develops the array types, locations, and capacity. The final design phase includes the finalization of the array types, locations, and capacity, as well as the electrical distribution plans, layouts, and routing.  The project included electric vehicle charging stations for public use. JDR is also providing construction administration for the project.

Our approach to this project was to develop a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution that provides an educational opportunity. Two separate photovoltaic arrays totaling 73 kW were designed to provide 95% of the electrical use for the facility. These arrays were a 27 kW roof-mounted array and a 46 kW array designed as a large event shelter. The photovoltaic panels on the shelter roof are constructed with glass panels that allow some light to pass thru the panels to space below. The multi-function shelter was designed with photovoltaic panels creating the roof of the 40-foot by 62-foot structure. This shelter is planned to be used for private events, public events, and events associated with the near-by Capital City State Trail.

Through the innovative solution of products, JDR was able to unite the stakeholders of the project to work together to create a unique solution for the shelters that is unique, educational, and visually appealing.

This new 11-story mixed-use building includes above-ground, climate-controlled parking, 23,000 square feet of commercial office space and hotel space conveniently located adjacent to the Hilldale Shopping Center.

The Spring Hill Suites hotel is ideal for both business and leisure travelers. The seven floors of suite-style guest rooms offer a dining area and kitchenette. The hotel offers 2,000 square feet of meeting space, a full-service lobby bar with outdoor patio seating, guest laundry facilities, an indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center.

JDR provided full plumbing design for the entire building domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, grease waste, and natural gas systems. As well as fire protection scope documents. Additionally, we calculated and sized equipment for the domestic hot water system, water softening, domestic water pressure booster system, and grease interceptor equipment.

The project remodeled the former Syverson Lutheran Home in Eau Claire, WI into a high-end apartment complex along the Chippewa River.

JDR Engineering provided plumbing and fire protection design services for a new community recreation and event center located on the campus of the Arcadia School District. This new space provides a wide variety of wellness and recreational programming for the public; as well as, accommodating the Arcadia School District’s facility needs for physical education classes, large group activities, and athletic practices or competitions.

The 75,000-square-foot facility is home to a community center that incorporates athletic facilities. The addition to the middle/high school includes a three-court gymnasium, concessions, indoor run/walk track, fitness center, locker rooms, exercise studio, community meeting room, adult and youth activity spaces, additional athletic practice space, weight room and music storage for the school district and the Arcadia Public Library.

JDR also provided BIM coordination services for HVAC and plumbing disciplines including piping, ductwork, equipment, accessories, and supports. Coordination with other trades is being completed to address and resolve conflicts. 

JDR Engineering provides HVAC, electrical, and plumbing and fire protection engineering services in the design and construction of Woodman’s stores throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. Woodman's began in 1919 as a produce stand in Janesville, WI. Woodman's was privately owned by the Woodman family until 1998, when it became a 100 percent employee-owned company.

Since the late 1970s, Woodman's has opened several stores throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. The company prefers not to take on debt so it opens new stores only every 2–3 years and remodels existing stores in between opening new stores.

The Madison Fire Department’s new administration facility and renovation of Fire Station No. 1 will boost public safety capabilities citywide. JDR Engineering provided HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering services for the new administration office and fire station renovation.  In addition to the new office space, conference areas, and fitness center, the new Administration Office included a state of the art command center designed to be shared with multiple fire, law enforcement, and other critical city agencies.

The renovation of Fire Station No. 1 has provided an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art, gender-neutral living quarters. The station will now be able to accommodate more fire engines, crews and more engine companies if needed, as the population in this area continues to grow.

The design emphasis was on energy efficiency, starting with station insulation and a new heating and air conditioning system and achieved LEED gold designation.

The final cost for both fire department projects will be $8.3 million. Improvements were sorely needed to “the gray box,” as firefighters called the old administration building. Space was a big problem, not only for storage but for staff. “I know when I started as a chief [in 2013], I was in there with two other chiefs in one office,” Christenson recalls.

The old administration facility was 15,000 square feet. The new space’s 25,000 square feet allows for well-stocked and attractive break rooms and a new health and fitness area — a first for the department. It has free weights, Nautilus and rowing machines, and a treadmill that accommodates laptop use. Across the hall are lockers and a shower.

A new training area features interactive audiovisual technology so crews can learn without leaving their own stations. Large electronic maps appear throughout the facility, tracking units in real time, across the city.

New Glarus Home is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) on 30-acres in New Glarus. Several levels of care ranging from independent living to comprehensive skilled nursing care, as well as, outpatient Therapy Services are offered at this facility. The renovation and addition to the existing New Glarus Home adds much needed space and enhances the Therapy and Short Term Rehabilitation Programs.  The project includes 40,000 square feet of new construction that will add (2) two Skilled Nursing units and (1) Rehab/Physical Therapy unit. Additionally, a 10,000 square foot renovation of the main building and 20,000 square foot renovation at the Glarner Lodge will be completed.

JDR Engineering provided HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection design services. Plumbing work shall include new water distribution, sanitary, and vent piping, plumbing fixtures, water softener, and water heating equipment.  The HVAC scope of work includes the design of new HVAC system(s) to serve the project areas designed in accordance with the ASHRAE Healthcare Guidelines and requirements of DHFS/DQA.  Electrical design includes power distribution and lighting throughout the additions and remodeled areas.

This three-story (plus mechanical penthouse) student union was constructed next to the existing facility. The existing building was demolished after the new facility opened for use. The existing building site was graded and landscaped, and provided approximately 1.6 acres of campus green space.

The new student union includes space for student organizations, Student Senate, retail areas, dining and food service, meeting rooms, lounges, ballrooms, the University Bookstore, and administrative offices. Included as part of the project are modifications to the existing parking, utility services, and necessary restoration of areas of the Little Niagara Creek disturbed by this project.

JDR Engineering provides HVAC design, Electrical Design, LEED consultation, and Energy modeling services for the design and construction of the new student union for the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.  The project was designed to meet a LEED Silver Certification rating in accordance with 2009 LEED standards. The project included the following energy efficiency strategies: 

• Air-Side Energy Recovery
• Demand controlled ventilation via CO2 monitoring
• Occupancy sensors for control of temperature, lighting for assembly spaces
• LED lighting technology
• Computerized building automation system for lighting and HVAC control 

UW-Madison Sterling Hall is home to the UW Plasma Physics Group. The building has been upgraded and adapted to new uses through the years.

This project analyzes the existing Sterling Hall building infrastructure and makes improvement recommendations to accommodate the Terrestrial Reconnection Experiment (TREX), including lab and support space. The TREX experiment uses the Plasma Dynamo Experiment (MPDX) for simulation of the earth’s magnetic field. MPDX includes a machine which centers around a 10’ diameter sphere simulating the sun’s magnetic dynamo. This requires a large assembled component to be lowered into place inside the present MPDX machine during the times when it is used for this purpose. JDR Engineering provided HVAC, Electrical and Lighting, Plumbing, and Fire Protection engineering design.

Building modifications needed to accommodate the TREX experiment include:

• Remodel space on the second floor above the MPDX to be used for assembly and storage of TREX equipment and components
• Create an opening in the existing second floor structure to allow the TREX assembled components to be lowered into the MPDX
• Provide a crane (hung from the existing third floor structure) to be used to insert the TREX assembled components into the MPDX
• Remodel support space in the basement to accommodate high voltage capacitor banks to store pulsed power.
• Upgrade mechanical and electrical systems serving the Plasma Lab to accommodate experimental equipment.

A new Fire and Paramedic Training Center has been constructed at the Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC). The L.E. Phillips Fire Safety Center is used for emergency services training and as a site for businesses to conduct research and development on products requiring fire testing, such as fire extinguishers, doors, windows, and glass.  The center at CVTC is one of only four like it in the country and JDR Engineering provided HVAC and Electrical engineering design.

The building's main feature is a 50x50 foot burn room, complete with 30 foot ceilings, and concrete walls that are one foot thick all the way around the room and temperature safe, shatter-proof observation window for students.  The room also features a double exhaust system and custom vents along the walls to allow air in and out.

The Fire Safety Center also has an outdoor fire testing area, a secure outdoor storage area for the heptane, a highly flammable chemical, storage for emergency service vehicles and a physical fitness training area for the fire, paramedic and police students.

In addition to providing the instructors and students with updated technologies the new facility will be used by police and fire departments from all over west-central Wisconsin, as well as other companies that will be able to rent the building to test their products.

The design was a balance of providing safety and durability for the facility and required conditions for UL fire testing. Two fans on the roof each can move up to15,000 cubic feet per minute of air with adjustable air intake vents on the walls. A computer-controlled system monitors indoor and outdoor temperatures, wind speeds, and other atmospheric conditions.

AROW Global is the leading design and manufacturer of window and glazing systems for the mass transit industry in North America.

The project consists of an office expansion addition and significant renovation that will create several new offices along with multiple workspaces, collaboration zones as well as multiple conference rooms, and a state-of-the-art training room and team member support spaces. The 2-story office addition adds approximately 12,000 total square feet. Renovations to the existing 2,850 square foot single-story office space are also part of this project. The renovation and addition required significant phasing of work as they needed to be able to utilize their existing office space as the new expansion was constructed. When the new addition was completed, the Arow Global staff was able to take occupancy of the new space allowing for the completion of the remodel to the existing office space.

JDR Engineering provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for this 480,000 square foot mixed use building. The structure is a 14-story building which houses the City of Madison Fire Department Headquarters, and includes over 350 underground parking stalls, 248 market-rate apartments and commercial space. The development also has a lot of greenspace, including a dog walk area. Ovation 309 received the InBusiness, Greater Madison Commercial Design Award for Best New Development or Renovation – Mixed Use.

Hilldale Mall, which opened in 1962, is one of the city’s oldest shopping destinations. JDR Engineering has been providing design engineering services for these renovations and redevelopments since 2013. Services provided include HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection.

The area on the north side was transformed into an outdoor mall between Macy’s and Metcalfe’s Market grocery store. This was a $15 million, 53,000-square-foot redevelopment that created an open-air corridor on the shopping center’s north end.

The north side project has been deemed the most significant expansion in Hilldale Mall’s history. These major renovations over the past several years have transformed the shopping center into a town center with outdoor entrances to new retailers and new restaurants, parking garages, a theater and outdoor greenspace.

The transformation continues on the south side of the property with a 55,000 square-foot project that will provide more visibility outside between Macy’s and the Sundance Cinemas. The area will be transformed into a pedestrian friendly, open-air space. The green space in front of Sundance Cinemas is planned for family-friendly programs and events. The second phase transforms the mall into a completely open-air format with a diverse mix of new and old retailers and restaurant options.

JDR Engineering provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services, and Energy Simulation for the design and construction of the new medical office building project for UW Health Systems.  The project achieved USGBC LEED Silver Certification rating in accordance with 2009 USGBC LEED standards for New Construction.  The medical clinic includes space for primary and urgent care, obstetrics and gynecology, physical therapy, laboratory and clinic offices.  This two-story medical office building, also includes an underground parking garage. 

The plumbing building systems consisted of domestic water, medical compressed air, sanitary, and storm drain systems.  The medical compressed air system followed NFPA 99 and Healthcare Guidelines for a clinic.  Plumbing fixtures were healthcare grade and also low flow to obtain USGBC LEED Silver Certification.

Fire protection systems included a wet sprinkler system for the majority of the building, and a dry pipe system serving a portion of the parking garage that is subject to freezing.

Designed utilizing Revit 3D modeling software for mechanical system integration and conflict control with building components.  The HVAC system includes high efficient VAV rooftop units and VAV terminal units with hot water reheat coils for zone temperature control.  The building hot water system includes high efficient condensing boilers, low temperature heating loop and variable speed system pumps.  The building controls consist of a direct digital control (DDC) system utilizing wireless zone temperature sensors along with occupancy sensor control for energy conservation. 

The building lighting includes the use of LED lighting technology and lighting controls.  Security, data and card access systems were closely coordinated with UW Health Systems IT group and included as part of the electrical systems for the project.

JDR Engineering provided HVAC design, borefield design, energy modeling and enhanced commissioning. The design goal of the Job Corps Center was to create a community campus with the focus on learning. The campus design included many gathering spaces for the diverse student groups to interact both formally and informally.  The Milwaukee Job Corps Center includes 8 new buildings on 25 acres of land on the northwest side of Milwaukee. This one of a 120 such centers in the US and will house up to 300 students in a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week learning environment. The students live here year-around while learning life skills, working towards a GED and developing professional trade skills.

The project utilized integrated design practices and incorporates many sustainable design features, including the following:

• 60 ground source wells – 385’ depth to anchor the campus GSHP system
• Energy recovery ventilators
• In-floor radiant heating
• Complete campus Direct Digital Control System
• Provisions for Solar Heating integrated into ground source loop plant
• 20% more efficient in its use of water
• Incorporates natural daylight to light into all occupied spaces
• Use of rain gardens and storm water retention ponds to minimize the storm water runoff
• Uses native, low maintenance landscape

Designed according to LEED-Platinum certification requirements, the 50,000 square foot Resilience Research Center includes greenhouses and rooftop gardens; neighborhood center and kitchen incorporating job training and education services; MG& E energy services center to test and demonstrate alternative energy approaches and collaborative research facilities; and 5,000 square feet of retail space. The Resilience Research Center houses Badger Rock Middle School, the third charter school in the Madison Metropolitan School District and the only one with an agri-urban focus.

JDR Engineering provided HVAC engineering and energy modeling services in a design-build teamed arrangement with H&H Industries Inc. 

Phase I design included the following innovative design and system components:

• 100 (+) Ton Vertical Geothermal Borefield
• Water-cooled Variable Refrigerant Flow Heat Recovery System
• Dedicated outside air heat pump unit equipped with total energy recovery wheel
• Water-to-Water Heat Pump connected to geothermal for production of hot water used for radiant floors
• Water-to-Water Heat Pump connected to geothermal to be utilized for fish tank water temperature maintenance in both heating and cooling seasons.

Additionally, JDR Engineering provided Electrical and Lighting design engineering services and daylight modeling services in a design-build teamed arrangement with Forward Electric. 

Phase I design included the following innovative design and system components:

• Daylighting Control
• Photometric Optimization of Lighting Design integrated with occupancy and daylighting control strategies
• Provisions for implementation of Photovoltaic panels (later installed by H&H Energy Services)

The UW Madison Chemistry Building was evaluated for energy conservation opportunities. Building use and air handling schedules were reviewed, along with measuring and documenting current building airflows. After reviewing the current building use, HVAC system control, and building test data, energy saving ideas (Energy Conservation Opportunities – ECO) were drafted and evaluated.

A building energy model was constructed for the building to simulate current building energy use, and evaluate potential energy savings generated by each ECO.

The eQUEST program was used to perform the building simulation. eQUEST is a widely recognized full building simulation program that utilizes the Department of Energy, DOE-2 energy calculation engine.

A room by room evaluation of all the labs in the building was done to determine the risk level associated with each lab so an appropriate design air change rate could be determined. The modeled energy conservation opportunities presented the owner with potential annual energy savings of over $780,000.

New low flow, high performance hoods were installed in the Mathews and Daniels Building wings (approximately 100 hoods) that incorporated the new design exhaust airflows. Many of the main labs in Mathews and Daniels were remodeled with new hood locations and lab workstations. During the remodeling of the labs the HVAC in the respective labs were reconfigured to accommodate the new hood locations as well as addressing previously poor air distribution issues that conflicted with proper hood operation and occupant safety.

Upon completion of the construction phase of the projects, the building was monitored by JDR Engineering for two years as part of a Measurement and Verification process to insure the realization of the savings projected by the energy conservation opportunities report. Any issues where performance was compromised was reported to the building authorities and corrected to maintain the building performance.

The facility was designed to allow facilities and engineering staff to work and function together seamlessly at one location.   This 25,000 square foot building is home to Promega’s facilities and engineering team. The facility includes offices and support space for facilities engineering staff along with an electronics lab, machine shop, clean room, production assembly space, and maintenance/storage garage.  The support space gives the engineering staff the area and tools needed to maximize efficiency and performance. The production assembly space is used to construct prototype manufacturing equipment and allow modification of prototypes prior to final installation in the production setting.

Indoor mechanical systems were installed including air handlers, hydronic heating, energy recovery and infrared heating.  An emphasis was placed on systems/zoning as not all spaces are occupied all of the time.  Additionally, space pressure relationships and building humidity levels were carefully considered and accommodated within the design.

High efficiency lighting was installed along with task specific lighting where required. 

The building includes a high efficiency hot water heating system along with compressed air system.

JDR Engineering provided HVAC, electrical, and plumbing engineering services for this new 35,000 square foot Skogen’s Festival Foods Support Office in Onalaska, WI. The new building includes offices, exercise facility, and support spaces including central IT support, accounting, and human resources to better serve the many Skogen’s Festival Foods grocery stores. Indoor mechanical systems included air handlers and hydronic heating. In-row cooling units were provided in a cold-aisle containment arrangement to maintain acceptable temperature and humidity levels for the current and future IT servers.

SSM Health - St. Clare Hospital owns, manages and is affiliated with 20 acute care hospitals and 3 nursing homes in 4 states (Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Oklahoma).

JDR has worked on multiple projects at the facilities of SSM Health - St. Clare Medical Center in a partnered design-build relationship for over 7 years and has completed multiple renovation projects including, but not limited to, the following:

The Circus World Museum preserves an unparalleled collection of State owned archival materials dating from the 1790’s. Careful coordination with Circus World Museum staff is required to protect and/or temporarily relocate components of the historic collections within the building throughout stages of the project. JDR provided HVAC, electrical and plumbing engineering services. The existing steam heating and humidification system was replaced with a new high efficiency hot water condensing boilers and electric to steam humidifiers. The existing roof mounted air cooled condensing units and HVAC control system were also be replaced. The repair and replacement of the boiler system, air handling systems, air cooled condensing units, piping systems, terminal equipment and HVAC controls are needed to protect the building and historic content.

The University of Wisconsin has an ongoing policy of evaluating energy consumed by buildings located on campus.  As part of this ongoing practice, the McArdle Cancer Research Building was evaluated for potential energy conservation opportunities. JDR Engineering served as the Energy Analyst and Design Engineer and was responsible for reviewing building use and air handling schedules, along with measuring and documenting current building airflows.

A building energy model was constructed for the facility to simulate current building energy use.  The baseline model was used to evaluate the potential energy savings generated by each Energy Conservation Opportunity (ECO). The building simulation program eQUEST was used to perform the building simulation.  eQUEST is a widely recognized full building simulation program that utilizes the Department of Energy “DOE-2” energy calculation engine. The estimated annual energy savings (using current University energy rates) is approximately $236,241. ($219,098 savings for the implementation of the ECO’s).

The existing constant volume dual duct system was converted to a variable air volume reheat system. The existing system had dual duct supply air cabinets recessed in the exterior walls at the occupied spaces. Since the existing dual duct boxes were in poor condition, the decision was made to remove the existing wall supply ducts to new variable air volume boxes in each occupied space. Comfort and maintenance will be improved with this new system.

JDR Engineering is providing HVAC, electrical, technology, plumbing and fire protection services for the renovations planned for the Dodgeville School district.

Upgrades for the High School will consist of interior and infrastructure renovations and upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to make the facility more energy efficient. System upgrades will include complete HVAC replacement, plumbing and electrical systems that have exceeded useful life, and classroom lighting. New construction additions include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Innovation Center, Library Media Center, Distance Learning Lab (flexible classrooms), music classroom, expanded lobby with restrooms, kitchen/serving area and greenhouse. Renovations will be made to the science classrooms and tech ed/agricultural classrooms. The cafeteria and commons area, lockers rooms, and fitness center will be expanded and renovated. ADA code compliance upgrades will be made.   

This project includes an upgraded main distribution panel, energy efficient LED lighting fixtures with occupancy sensors, programmable lighting control panel to control lights in corridors, gymnasium, cafeteria, other large spaces and exterior lights. Updates to the IT and Data infrastructure will be completed to accommodate building upgrades.

JDR Engineering has been involved in over 35,000 GSF of office and building renovation at the City County Building in Madison.   In most instances, the existing building HVAC, fire protection and plumbing systems were either removed and replaced entirely or extensively modified to accommodate new space layouts.

In-depth field investigation is performed for each project on the plumbing, fire protection and HVAC systems to determine existing conditions, systems configuration and overall deficiencies.  The facility maintenance department and staff are also regularly consulted to gather first-hand information and knowledge on the condition and performance of existing building systems and to discuss new system and equipment preferences.

This project included renovation and development of an existing multi-tenant building located in Brookfield, WI. Pentair offers residential water filtrations solutions.  The project renovated approximately 45,500 square feet. The renovated spaces included break room and storage space on the lower level, laboratory space and associated support spaces on the first floor, and finished office/business space on the second floor.

Plumbing work included new water distribution, sanitary, and vent piping, and plumbing fixtures to support the new lab space. HVAC equipment was provided to support new lab processes related to exhaust hoods and general exhaust.  Electrical work included extension of power to support the new lab space and associated lab equipment, new lighting throughout the renovated areas of the project, and technology work was roughed-in for data/voice jacks including boxes and conduit to above the ceiling.

The new 45,000 square foot, two-story Porsche Dealership includes new auto showroom area, customer lounge, sales area, vehicle delivery, service reception space, service department for 15 vehicles, a two-level parts department and employee areas such as a break room and locker room. JDR Engineering provided HVAC Design, Electrical Design, Plumbing and Fire Protection Design for the design and construction of this new auto dealership project.

The distinctive building exterior includes a structurally-glazed Fin system and aluminum composite wall panels consistent with the Porsche brand. The site employs an underground stormwater detention system and elaborate site lighting.  The building is heated and cooled with 7 packaged rooftop units, make-up air units, infrared heating in Service areas, various exhaust systems and an elaborate control system.

JDR Engineering is providing HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing engineering for the remodel and re-design for Sauk Prairie Ambulance.  The project consisted of complete renovation of an existing building which includes partial demolition, redevelopment of the existing space, exterior modifications and the addition of a four stall double entry bay garage for ambulances.

The building is 4,400 square feet without the new garage — about 3,000 more square feet than the current location. One very important change at the new site is to have accommodations for EMS technicians who are on call and live too far away to make the five-minute response time requirement. The Sauk Prairie Ambulance Association district includes the villages of Sauk City, Prairie du Sac and Merrimac, the towns of Merrimac, Prairie du Sac and Roxbury, and portions of the towns of Troy, Honey Creek, Sumpter and West Point.

The new Dane County Medical Examiner’s Complex will coordinate death investigations, assisting law enforcement agencies from a number of Wisconsin counties. The new facility will greatly expand the ability of the Medical Examiner’s Office and includes the state-of-the-art forensic technology.  The 28,500 square feet facility includes office, training and laboratory space for the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. This facility will greatly expand the ability of the Medical Examiner’s office to do complicated death investigations with state-of-the-art forensic technology.

It will house a Disaster Recovery Data Center a technology-equipped 911 Training Center. JDR Engineering provided HVAC, Electrical, Lighting, and Plumbing and Fire Protection design services. Uniquely, building systems will utilize waste heat from the landfill and the project includes the installation of solar panels, natural daylighting, and energy efficient light fixtures. 

The UW-Madison College of Engineering has hired a Principle Investigator whose research utilizes a Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) reactor and specialized Laboratory for semi-conductor manufacturing experiments. The space within the Engineering Centers Building to be remodeled encompasses approximately 1,320 square feet in three existing rooms. The remodeled space will be divided up into three new spaces consisting of a MOVCD Laboratory, Office Lab Space and new connecting corridor.

This project provides investigation and research, and design services to create a new high hazard (H-5) space as defined by the State of Wisconsin – Fire & Life Safety codes. Group H-5 includes occupancies containing hazardous production materials (HPM) used in semiconductor fabrication and research and development laboratories. The use of hazardous materials is very common and are used in many laboratories, including medical clinics and hospitals, research laboratories and manufacturing plants.

High-hazard occupancies are complex and pose many challenges for design professionals. Modifications to the building mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems are necessary to accommodate the new research planned for this space.

JDR Engineering prepared the feasibility study and provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and structural engineering services. The system modifications and upgrades include:

• Demolish the existing sprinkler system service to this area and install a new, separately zoned sprinkler system;
• Install new exhaust system with sprinklers inside the ductwork and redundant exhaust fan;
• Bring lab waste and vent to the room for a fume hood;
• Install a floor drain for a new hydrogen generator;
• Install lab cold water, lab air, house nitrogen, and RO water;
• Install redundant exhaust fans and equipment exhaust (for scrubbers, gas cabinets, fume hood, etc.) as required;
• Install Continuous Gas monitoring system for the lab space;
• Install new laboratory safety monitoring system with ambient chemical detection, duct chemical detection, lab gas emergency shut-off, lab equipment emergency shut-down, audio/visual alerts for occupants, fire-alarm integration, and exhaust system monitoring system;
• Install new process cooling system for the lab equipment with booster pump, filtration, and emergency cooling;
• Provide new electrical branch feeders and connections to area and new lab equipment;
• Provide new area lighting systems;
• Extension of existing fire alarm detection system to new spaces;
• Interconnection of all related systems to the existing Building Automation System

Construction was completed in September 2016 for this $17.7 million, skilled nursing and community based residential facility (CBRF) located in West Salem, Wisconsin. The new facility is a single story building with separate wings for different classes of care.  The facility includes private rooms with private bathrooms and showers. Also included is an assisted living wing and a behavioral health wing, which will concentrate on mental health issues in people of all ages.

The project will allow Lakeview to transition from a more institutionalized-type environment to the family-type spaces with private accommodations. This design evokes neighborhood living, creating spaces for residents to interact with one another, yet there is an emphasis on privacy.

RenewAire, a pioneer in enhancing indoor air quality (IAQ) energy-efficiently, cost-effectively and sustainably, renovated an existing 111,000-square-foot facility that’s more than double the size of its previous building.  The renovated facility supports RenewAire’s mission of fostering sustainability and long-standing commitment to helping the planet by reducing energy use and at the same time improving human health and well-being.

The renovated facility, which includes a single level, air conditioned high bay manufacturing/production area and two story office space is currently seeking LEED Gold certification.  In addition to seeking LEED Gold, the new facility is on track to achieve Green Globes and ENERGY STAR certifications as well.

The building HVAC systems include air to air energy recovery ventilators, indoor air handlers, high efficiency boiler plant, air turnover units and variable air volume systems.

Plumbing systems support the facility and include renovated toilet rooms, high efficiency fixtures and compressed air distribution.

The production space has unique electrical requirements including work stations with multiple voltages and phases for international product testing.

Partnering with Rinka Chung and Associated Bank provides us with an opportunity to provide design and construction services for both new branches and renovation projects for Associated Bank Branches per their prototype plans and specifications, and latest banking technologies. JDR Engineering provides HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology engineering services. As well as providing LEED consultation, commissioning, and energy modeling services.

Promega Corporation’s Biopharmaceutical Technology Center (BTC) is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the expanding office, manufacturing, research and development needs of Promega Corporation.  Promega Corporation is one of the largest privately held life sciences companies in the world.

The facility is one of the first of its kind in the United States to allow contract manufacturing of biological products. The laboratories accommodate production methods including large-scale cell biology, organic synthesis and electromagnetic separations and meet FDA Good Manufacturing Practices and ISO 9000 design criteria.  All offices are open and share a variety of common spaces including conference and lounge areas and were designed to promote interaction and flexibility. The building also includes training labs, classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium which is available for public use, and a full-service cafeteria and dining room to accommodate dining, meetings and conferences.

JDR Engineering is providing Plumbing, Fire Protection, HVAC, Electrical, and Technology Engineering Services associated clean room suite renovations and expansions at the BTC. The plumbing design includes an extension and renovation of existing building water and sanitary systems serving the renovated and expanded space with new compressed air system and new pure water systems.  Plumbing fixtures include emergency eye wash and emergency showers as required and a separate stand-alone drain collection system for the chemical waste room.   HVAC systems include a new chilled water cooling plant, multiple clean room air handling systems, with appropriate levels of filtration and space pressurization control/monitoring. The electrical systems include coordination of existing services and design of emergency power services and uninterruptable power supply systems. Low voltage systems design include security/card access, telecommunication cabling and wireless access and data room equipment.
